Shokz Is Now a Top-Five Headphone Brand at Europe's Largest Consumer-Electronics Retailer. Here's the Retail Mechanic Behind It.

Shokz, the open-ear and bone-conduction headphone brand, has climbed into a top-five headphone brand position at Europe's largest consumer-electronics retailer, a ranking it now holds alongside Apple and Sony. The retailer backed that shelf position with its own investment: the first exclusive Shokz boutique inside a MediaMarkt store, opened this year in Hamburg, Germany, on top of four consecutive years (2021-2024) of 200% year-on-year growth across 180+ retail partners in 8+ European markets, work nonplusultra has run since 2019. For a challenger consumer-electronics brand, the lesson is that a ranking like this is built store by store, not bought with a bigger media budget.

Shokz has climbed into a top-five headphone brand position at Europe's largest consumer-electronics retailer, a ranking it now holds alongside Apple and Sony. nonplusultra has run Shokz's retail growth across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) since 2019, the same relationship that took the brand from a single-category niche to placement across 180+ retail partners in 8+ European markets, including MediaMarkt and Saturn in Germany, Fnac in France, and Currys in the UK, delivering 200% year-on-year growth for four consecutive years, 2021 through 2024. The retailer has backed that trajectory with a commitment of its own: the first exclusive Shokz boutique inside a MediaMarkt store, opened this year in Hamburg, Germany. For a challenger consumer-electronics brand watching from outside, the interesting part is not the ranking. It is the mechanic that produced it.

We've run this account long enough to know the shift did not happen in a single quarter. Shokz entered European retail with a category-education problem: bone conduction and open-ear audio are purchases that need a shopper to understand what the product does before they will pay for it, a harder sell than matching a spec sheet against Apple's AirPods or Sony's headphone range. Apple and Sony do not need a shopper to learn a new listening concept before they buy; Shokz does, on every single sale. That is exactly the kind of shelf position that gets lost to a bigger media budget if the store-level execution behind it is thin.

A Top-Five Shelf Ranking Is Won on the Floor, Not in a Media Plan

CECONOMY, the parent company of MediaMarkt and Saturn, describes the group as Europe's leading consumer-electronics retailer by revenue, sales area, and headcount, with roughly 1,030 stores across 11 European countries. Reaching a top-five headphone ranking inside a network that size means outperforming category giants with far larger advertising budgets, inside a store network where a shopper compares products side by side rather than through a search results page. That ranking gets decided at the shelf: whether a customer picks the product up, understands what it does in thirty seconds, and trusts the person standing next to it enough to buy.

The First Exclusive Shokz Boutique Opened Inside MediaMarkt Hamburg

The clearest signal of that trust is the retailer's own investment. MediaMarkt opened the first exclusive Shokz boutique inside its Hamburg store this year, a dedicated shop-in-shop rather than a shared shelf bay. A retailer does not hand over floor space to a shop-in-shop for a brand it is lukewarm on. A boutique format is MediaMarkt betting its own square metres on Shokz continuing to sell at the rate that earned it the space, the retail equivalent of telling a brand: bring more, we will build around it.

Full-Funnel In-Store Presence Is the Mechanic Bigger Rivals Skip

The boutique is the visible part. Underneath it sits a full-funnel field programme nonplusultra has built with Shokz since 2019: placement negotiation, in-store demo units set up so a shopper can feel the open-ear fit, and staff trained specifically on the Shokz story rather than a generic headphone briefing. A trained seller who can explain bone conduction in one sentence turns a category-education problem into a sale in the time it takes a shopper to try the product on. Most challenger brands treat store staff as an afterthought to the marketing plan. The stores where Shokz outperforms are the ones where staff training happened before the media plan did.

Four Years of 200% Growth Taught Us Where Rankings Actually Come From

Here is the pattern across four years of this account that a media plan alone would not have found: the retailers where Shokz's growth compounded fastest were never the ones with the biggest launch campaign. They were the ones where the field team's return visits kept staff conviction current after the launch noise faded, store by store, quarter after quarter, long after the launch event was forgotten. A strong opening week tells a retailer a campaign worked. Four consecutive years of 200% year-on-year growth across 180+ retail partners tells a retailer the brand's in-store execution is durable, and durability, not one quarter's number, is what earns a shop-in-shop.

Having proven that formula in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the test ahead for Shokz is whether the same store-level mechanic travels intact into new European markets without the training rigour or field cadence being diluted along the way. That is a harder problem than winning the first ranking, because it means rebuilding staff conviction from zero in every market instead of compounding it in one.

A shelf ranking against category giants is defended at the store, not in the media plan: match training investment to media investment, not the other way round.

A retailer offering a shop-in-shop is a signal to build on, not a milestone to celebrate: field coverage and staff training need to scale with the new floor space, not lag behind it.

Treat store staff training as a launch requirement, not a follow-up: a seller who can explain a category-education product in one sentence does a selling job a media budget cannot do inside the store.

Measure retail performance in years, not launch weeks: it took four consecutive years of 200% year-on-year growth for Shokz to earn a shop-in-shop, not one strong opening quarter.

If you're building the store-level execution behind a shelf ranking rather than just the listing itself, our Field Sales & Merchandising service runs the training, staffing, and store coverage behind results like this one, and the Shokz case study has the full detail on how the four years of growth were built.
